STORY & TREATMENT

With Stephen Jeffreys

NO NEW DATE AVAILABLE YET

Previous workshop:

DATE & TIME:

SAT 20 June 2015, 10:00-17:00

ABOUT THE COURSE

Work with experienced screenwriter and playwright Stephen Jeffreys (THE LIBERTINE, LOST LAND, BACKBEAT, DIANA) on how to improve your craft skills, analyse scripts and develop your own treatments.

  • Develop new approaches to story through the use of story themes & templates.
  • Examine the strengths and pitfalls of different story structures.
  • Work up your own treatment.

It has often been suggested that there are only a limited number of stories and that all narratives are essentially variations on these basic themes. Playwright and Screenwriter Stephen Jeffreys takes this theme and turns it into a creative tool, useful for writers in all genres, directors, producers and dramaturgs.

During the morning session (10.30–13:00) Stephen will introduce story structures, develop the nine kinds of story and examine how a story idea can move to treatment. In the afternoon (14:00-17:00) we will work on treatment examples brought by participants, examining in detail the strengths and challenges of different stories and how to present them.

This workshop helps you to extend the range of your own work and to analyse the underlying dynamics of the story you're working on. Participants should be ready to listen, discuss and generate new material of their own during the day.

TESTIMONIALS

"I had the great pleasure of working with Stephen on his play The Libertine. Would that all playwrights had his openness, his talent, his hard-headedness, his experience, his enthusiasm, his audacity, his complexity and perhaps, best of all, his talent and interest in extracting and perfecting the best in others."
- John Malkovich

"Stephen Jeffreys is London's best kept secret. What he doesn't know about playwriting isn't worth knowing"
- Stephen Daldry
