ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Director to Actor to Director with Sarah-Louise Young and Russell Lucas is a practical and discussion based workshop aimed at stage & screen directors wishing to share, reassess and extend their directing language, thus nourishing their relationship with the actor.

COURSE CONTENT

What does a director really do for an actor?

In the morning session we'll be talking about the industry: how we work, flag up issues, concerns and specific situations directors have had when in-the-moment with an actor; what is the director's role and what are our responsibilities to the actor? How are screen and theatre acting different for performers and how do directors negotiate this? Director and actor; who wins on that pause and who should? If actors 'fly' the plane, can directors still navigate the journey?

The session will not only allow the sharing of indivdual practice within the group, but extend by offering practical ways to enable the director's objectives further whilst enabling the actor's core: their creativity.

Practical content:

The workshop will clearly demonstrate techniques to inspire actors to play with their text whilst allowing directors to still get what they need. We will look at actioning, getting more from the performance without saying 'More' and focusing the actor on their objectives of the scene over the drama of their environment.

How can we make this work!

In the afternoon Russell and Sarah-Louise are inviting industry actors to come and join the workshop to collaborate with participants on published scripts. This will give directors that rare opportunity to work in tandem with an actor with no added pressure of a performance. The text will be totally anonymous, firmly placing both the actor and director on an even playing field of discovery.

Q & A and round-up

Summing up the day and sharing discoveries with each other, including the actors' thoughts from the other side of the fence. It is hoped that this session will also be a great networking opportunity for all involved.
