The Tools of Directing give directors their own unique methodology and bring new insights and clarity to making the script great. It has three parts which form a whole. The Tools of Directing the Camera are an essential part of a whole directing methodology.

ABOUT SIMON PHILLIPS

Simon Phillips is a direction consultant for feature film and high level TV directors.

Many directors who have trained with Tools of Directing have gone on to great success, including the recent Nordic Noir series THE KILLING and THE BRIDGE. Emmy & Academy Award winning directors have engaged his services and the Tools of Directing workshops and seminars are presented internationally.

PURPOSE OF THE COURSE

Preparation work on your shooting script and powerful direction of the camera are vital to engage your audience. Directors need to have the tools and the skills to be able to direct the camera effectively under the pressure of production and yet keep creative ideas fresh and true. Camera course participants

COURSE CONTENT

Through practical exercises and analysing movie scenes each participant will learn a set of methods to plan camera positions for maximum emotional engagement. Unlike the usual cinematography training courses which concentrate on topics such as lighting, focus, special effects and technology, the emphasis here will be on developing a clear set of tools for knowing exactly where to place the camera and when to move it, so you can control the audience’s emotional experience throughout your story. These skills are essential in pre-production but invaluable on set when faced with the changeable reality of your shoot.

This is a Master Class for individual directors and camera-people (cinematographers and camera operators) who have already gained experience in their roles. Participants may be film school graduates, short film makers, and seasoned professional filmmakers who wish to take away a clear set of creative tools to share with their teams.

BOOKING

Because of the one-to-one nature of Simon’s work, places are very limited.
