4-6 OCT: Meisner Master Class with Stephen Bayly

Meisner for Directors, Actors & Casting Directors

Weekend Master Class with Stephen Bayly

Please get in touch with Iris on iris@dggb.org if you are interested in attending this course. We will be able to confirm a new future date shortly.

4-6 October 2013, London

Take it from a Director. If you get an actor that Sandy Meisner has trained you’ve been blessed.’ Elia Kazan

Building on the sell-out introductory workshop in previous years, the Directors Guild presents a 3-day ‘immersion’ workshop in the performance techniques of the late Sanford Meisner – for directors, actors, and casting directors working in all media, led by Stephen Bayly.

MEISNER TECHNIQUE

10 years ago Meisner was virtually unheard of in the UK.  Now every drama college teaches (as a minimum) basic familiarisation with these techniques, and specialist study centres have sprung up.  It behoves any director on top of his/her craft to learn about Meisner, if only in order to be conversant with these ideas in working with actors.

But more importantly, Stephen Bayly -- along with many other directors (starting with Sydney Pollack) -- has found Meisner’s approach to be a simple and effective way to bring the text to life, and achieve truthful, believable, emotionally rich performances from actors.

THE COURSE

The 3-day workshop is designed to eliminate the director’s fear of actors, and vice versa. It will cover the rudiments of Meisner technique, using the famous repetition exercises, and improvisation.  It will apply the improvisation to scene work, and include an example of working up a scene using Meisner’s methods.  Directors and casting directors participating will be required to work as actors, in order to experience first-hand the vulnerability and complex skillset required of an actor.

Stephen Bayly has produced such films as Richard III and Mrs. Dalloway and has directed, among other things, the Cannes sleeper hit Coming Up Roses. He was Director of the National Film and Television School UK. Stephen has studied Sanford Meisner’s methods intensively for 5 years as an actor, and now regularly teaches directors and actors as Visiting Professor at the Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión in Cuba.
In addition to London, he has given workshops in Colombia, Spain, Nigeria, Cardiff (for The Screen Academy Wales and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama). He has established Meisner labs in Havana and Bogotá, and a theatre company in Havana (La Peña Meisner). Learn more: www.directingarts.com.
