Tools of DDirecting the Actor 13-15 April 2012

Friday 13th March 7 - 9pm
Saturday 14th & Sunday
15th March
10 am to 5 pm

Have you ever felt that the existing methods were for primarily for the actors, and there was some deep, dark secret that experts weren't telling about exactly how to powerfully direct?

We are repeating Simon Phillips’ sell-out weekend masterclass exploring the Tools of Directing - The Actor.
These ground-breaking techniques give directors their own unique methodology. Simon brings new insight and clarity to the complex task of directing - and though his methods are based in film, they also apply to theatre.

Because of the one-to-one nature of Simon’s work, places are very limited, so please book early to avoid disappointment - see below.

ABOUT SIMON PHILLIPS

Simon Phillips is a Direction Coach for feature film directors. Oscar-winning filmmakers and experienced professional writers, directors and producers of films and TV series as diverse as Slumdog Millionaire, Sex And The City, and Cracker have all worked with Simon’s unique approach. His seminars have been taught in Europe and Hollywood and the Guild is pleased to help bring Simon’s methods to the UK, with every event sold out.

PURPOSE OF THE COURSE

Preparation work on your script and powerful direction of actors are vital to engage your audience. Directors need to have the tools to be able to direct their actors effectively under the pressure of production and yet keep their performance fresh and true. The masterclass will give you the experience of applying the tools through hands-on practical work and by being directed as actors. It is film-focused but the fast rehearsal planning, back-story improvisation and the clear tools for a director to get the specific performance their story needs will also benefit theatre directors.

COURSE CONTENT

•    Creative reading of a script that empowers the director and actors alike
•    Rehearsal planning to quickly get great performance
•    Back story improvisations to rapidly solve problems
•    How to speak to actors between takes
•    Working more effectively with actors in a short space of time

WHAT SKILLS WILL I ACHIEVE?

•    Identify what is missing in a script, and rehearsals that will save story
•    Use character motivation to get specific performance
•    Quickly build character biographies that give you power over your story
•    Learn to give feedback to overcome problems
•    Improve the prospects of success for your project

COMMENTS AFTER PREVIOUS TOOLS OF DIRECTING MASTERCLASSES

“The Master Class changed my view of the director's role and indeed more usefully, the do's and DON'TS. I will use all the tools mentioned in the Master Class. It is interactive, practical, engaging and real.”

Oscar-winning Producer, Peter Fudakowski

“Using The Tools of Directing methodology to pinpoint critical moments was vital to proceeding swiftly and concretely. This approach paid immediate dividends for my relationship with the actors.”

Charles McDougall, Director Desperate Housewives and Sex and the City
