SIMON PHILLIPS - INTRODUCTION TO TOOLS OF DIRECTING
thumbnail
Saturday 14th May
1 to 5 pm

Etcetera Theatre, Camden, London NW1 7BU

Have you ever felt that all the existing methods were for the actors and writers to do great work, and there was some deep, dark secret that the experts weren't telling us about what a director can do?

To introduce his work to a new and wider audience, the Guild are repeating Simon Phillips’ Introduction to  Tools of Directing.

Simon’s ground-breaking techniques bring new insight and clarity to the complex task of directing and give directors their own unique methodology. Tools of Directing are  dependant neither on theories of writing nor acting, but relate specifically to the director’s craft using techniques Simon has developed over ten years working as a directing coach in film and television.

The Guild is delighted to support Tools of Directing; places are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment.

ABOUT THE SEMINAR

The seminar will cover:
  • Defining the advanced tools of directing
  • Creative reading of a script
  • Rehearsal planning
  • Where to put the camera to create emotion
The tools you will take away will be:
  • A way to identify the most important moments in your scenes
  • A powerful word that will help you work creatively with your writer on problem scenes
  • A simple tool that lets you earn the right to improve an actor's performance

ABOUT SIMON PHILLIPS

Simon Phillips is a Direction Coach for feature film directors and television. Oscar-winning filmmakers and experienced professional writers, directors and producers of films and TV series as diverse as The Full Monty, Sex In The City, and Cracker have all worked with Simon’s unique approach. His seminars have been given in Europe and Hollywood and the Guild is pleased to help bring Simon’s methods to the UK.

COMMENTS AFTER PREVIOUS TOOLS OF DIRECTING MASTERCLASSES

“Very inspiring and a fantastic learning experience... With this understanding, I know I will be able to focus much more clearly on what I am looking for in the scenes and on what to point the camera at.” Andrew Lindsay

“The master class was invaluable. I found myself directing a piece a couple of weeks thereafter... The results spoke volumes, I came away feeling that my game had been 'upped'.” Guy Ducker

“Today was the last shooting day of my film. One of the actors sent an SMS to me this evening:
“Many thanks. Great fun and challenging to work with you,
a director who is interested and who has the tools to direct
for real, instead of a lot of empty talk. It's been a real pleasure!"
 - thank you for The Tools.”
