SIMON PHILLIPS - ADVANCED TOOLS OF DIRECTING THE CAMERA WEEKEND MASTERCLASS - 1st - 3rd October 2010
thumbnail
Friday 1st October 7 - 9pm
Saturday 2nd & Sunday 3rd October
10 am to 5 pm

Novotel Hotel, London NW1

This is the UK premiere of an international seminar that has been attended by professionals and Oscar winning filmmakers of films and TV series as diverse as The Full Monty, Sex In The City and Cracker. They have all worked with these practical methods that bring new insight and clarity to the complex tasks of the director and cinematographer. Simon Phillips' Tools of Telling the Story with the Camera was a sell out success at Camerimage - The XV International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography in Poland.

This inspirational workshop is built around a series of highly participative practical exercises where Simon Phillips guides each director and camera-person through the development of emotionally moving storytelling. To create a moving story, it is important for the director and camera team to share a common language, the tools and the skills to be able to create not just visually stunning images but ones that crucially create emotion in the audience.

In January the Guild staged an introduction to Advanced Tools of Directing. The workshop sold out immediately and garnered high praise from participants. Simon Phillips’ ground-breaking techniques give directors their own unique methodology, neither dependant on theories of writing nor acting, but relating specifically to the director’s craft.

Because of the one-to-one nature of Simon’s work, places are very limited, so please book early to avoid disappointment. The Guild is able to offer a limited number of heavily discounted placements.

ABOUT SIMON PHILLIPS

Simon Phillips is a Direction Coach for feature film directors, a consultant for script development and the creator of Tools of Directing. The seminars have been given in Europe and Hollywood and his methodology has recently been awarded prize position for presentation at the New Technology Campus at the International Broadcasting Conference 2010. The Directors Guild is very proud to help bring Simon’s methods to the UK.

WHO IS THIS SEMINAR FOR?

This is a master class for individual directors and camera-people (cinematographers and camera operators) who have already gained experience in their roles. Participants may be film school graduates, short film experts, and seasoned professional filmmakers who wish to take away a clear set of creative tools to share with their teams.

COURSE CONTENT

Through practical exercises and analysing movie scenes each participant will learn a set of methods to plan camera positions for maximum emotional engagement. Unlike the usual cinematography training courses which concentrate on topics such as lighting, focus, special effects and lab technology; the emphasis here will be on developing a clear set of tools for knowing exactly where to place the camera and when to move it, so you can control the audience’s emotional experience throughout your story. These skills are essential in pre-production but invaluable on set when faced with the changeable reality of your shoot.

PARTICIPANTS WILL DISCOVER AND PRACTICE

•    Understanding why we use framing as we do
•    Body language and dramatic blocking
•    Deciding the essential subject of every set up
•    Special tactics for shooting problem scenes
•    How camera creates surprise, mystery and suspense

WHAT ELSE WILL I TAKE AWAY?

The participants will be able to join a network that gives further training, tools and support for professional directors using the latest technologies.

DATES: The class will take over 5 sessions; Friday 1st October 7-9 pm
Saturday and Sunday 2nd & 3rd October 10 am-5 pm
